"Playing the blues is my first love. Blues is pretty broad when you get down to it - slow blues, jump blues, jazz blues, swing blues, electric blues, acoustic blues, chicago blues... I'm not allergic to other genres, I just really love the blues in all its forms."  :-))>

Hailing from Canberra ACT the Chris Harland Blues Band have released their long awaited new album, "A Long Time Coming". Together with Chris Harland (Lead Vocals/Guitar) is Wayne Kelly (Keyboards), Paul Leeder (Bass Guitar) and Mitch Preston (Drums/Percussion). The recording features Chris' own written songs together with classics from Chester Burnett (aka Howlin' Wolf), Otis Rush and John Lee Hooker. Having been voted best instrumentalist of the year by the Canberra Blues Society in 2008, Chris Harland has forged ahead with a superb new album release, A Long Time Coming features not only a splendid set of studio recorded songs but unique gems from rare live recordings as well.

One of the traditional components of the Blues is the railroad. The empty railroad track on the cover of this CD raises the question, are you looking ahead or are you looking back. This classy album manages to supply both answers. Chris Harland Blues Band, Chris Harland guitar and vocals, Wayne Kelly keyboards, Mitch Preston drums and Paul Leeder bass, deliver a classy, tight and creative blues. The album is a nice mix of original Chris Harland compositions and loved standards. Four individually classy musicians slot together as a very strong band who are getting a lot of attention on the blues circuit, their reputation is deservedly growing. There are four live tracks included which indicate why they are a very popular live band.

Getting up on my soap box I want to say thank you to the Chris Harland Band for not taking the easy way and being a cover band on the Blues standards of Howling Wolf, Otis Rush, John Lee Hooker et al, nor do they mirror the versions of John Mayall of such compositions. This band has the courage and vision to create their own interpretation and consequently the music maintains the freshness, the honesty and deep personal aspects essential to blues.

The trip Chris Harland Blues Band take you on with "A Long Time Coming" is varied, the countryside sometimes really rocks past, on other occasions it is lyrical only to take you to deep and lonely places. I get a very strong impression the finished CD is as much a labour of love as it is a very strong testament to the blues. This CD has, indeed, been a long time coming and whether the musical statements made are retrospective or prospective they are strong, very well played and very well worth listening to.

Support your local musicians is a well intentioned catch cry, in this case it is an expression of logic. You should lay your hands on "A Long Time Coming" for the simple reason being that it is a damn good record.

Canberra outfit the Chris Harland Blues Band have released a very classy album that will make you want to keep your CD player button on repeat.

A Long Time Coming is smooth blues from four highly skilled practitioners in the art. It is a mix of live and studio recorded originals and covers.

Chris Harland leads on guitar and vocals, often sounding spookily like Eric Clapton in both regards. Harland knows his way around the fretboard and makes his guitar sing.

And with Wayne Kelly on keyboards, Paul Leeder on bass and Mitch Preston on drums, the band leader couldn't ask for a better crew of musicians.

These guys know the blues, have been playing it for years and together have produced a beautiful record.
